Broadway Tech Accelerator, Help Fuel Innovation (Part 1)
3/21/19
Last week, the news dropped that The Shubert Organization, IT Mentors, and Exponential Creativity Ventures are starting a new venture: Broadway Tech Accelerator (read about it here). So what exactly is an accelerator, and how can the industry get involved in this new initiative?
An accelerator is a Silicon Valley term for a program that aims to facilitate the growth of smart tech startups, usually in a specific industry. Accelerators provide funding, education, workspace, access to specific (and difficult to find) resources, and networks of relevant people who can help entrepreneurs grow.
That last item is incredibly vital, as the ability to quickly access resources and information about how to operate a business, define market fit, build for scale, and assemble the right team are crucial to a young company’s success.
The most well-known accelerators, such as Ycombinator and Tech Stars, have launched major brands like Reddit, Airbnb, ClassPass, and Dropbox. Here in NYC, we have Tech Stars, but also R-Labs, Urban-X, Grand Central Tech, and New Labs, among many others.
These programs smooth over the bumps a young entrepreneur might have in building their business. Via finely-tuned curricula and access to large networks of industry professionals, accelerators can be unique launching pads for young startups.
Interestingly, live entertainment and the performing arts has been under-represented in this growth-focus sector… until now. Next week, we’ll talk about how the Broadway Tech Accelerator will work and how the industry can get involved in this new initiative.
